Path 1: Spanish Language and Culture
Courses: Spanish 10 - 20 - 30-3Y
Spanish 10-3Y is for beginners, students with little or no experience in Spanish.
Spanish 20-3Y is for students who have taken Spanish (non-bilingual) in junior high for 2-3 years.
Spanish is one of the fastest-growing second-language programs in the province. This program is designed for non-native speakers and beginning-level students.
Course Features:
- Build Confidence: Focus on building vocabulary and using the language in everyday situations.
- Tense Mastery: Learn to speak and communicate in the past, present, and future tenses.
- Cultural Immersion: Exposure to diverse Hispanic cultures through videos, texts, music, and movies.
- Skill Development: Develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills through projects, presentations, and interactive work.
- Post-Secondary Pathways: Spanish 30 is a 30-level course that can be used for university admission and scholarship applications.
Continuity & Travel:
- Students who completed Spanish 7, 8, and 9 in junior high typically transition into Spanish 20-3Y.
- Travel opportunities to Spanish-speaking countries (such as Costa Rica, Cuba, Spain, and Puerto Rico) are available to practice skills first-hand.
- Provincial exchange programs are offered with Asturias (Spain) and Guadalajara (Mexico).

Path 2: Spanish Bilingual Program
Courses: Spanish Language Arts 10 – 20 – 30 AP,
Spanish Social Studies 10, Spanish CALM 20
Strathcona is the only high school in Edmonton Public Schools to offer the Spanish Bilingual Program, and we are a member of the International Spanish Academy (ISA). This stream is intended for students continuing from a junior high bilingual program.
Program Requirements:
- Credits & Diploma: Students earn 25 credits and receive a High School Spanish Bilingual diploma certifying their achievement.
- Entry Points: Specifically for students who have completed the junior high Spanish bilingual program. Native speakers not coming from a bilingual program require a teacher assessment for entry.
- Course Load: Bilingual students will take the following courses in Spanish:
- Spanish Language Arts 10, 20, and 30
- Spanish Social Studies 10
- Spanish CALM 20 (Career and Life Management)
Spanish Language Arts 10, 20, 30 AP:
- Strictly Spanish: Instruction and communication are conducted entirely in Spanish.
- Authentic Resources: Students engage with art, film, literature, and current events from Latin America and Spain.
- Critical Thinking: Emphasis on discussing complex issues, guest speakers, and participation in local cultural events.
International Accreditation:
- DELE Exam: Students have the opportunity to challenge the DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) language proficiency exam.
- Spanish AP Exam: Students prepare for the Spanish AP Language and Culture exam in their grade 11 or 12 years.
Spanish CALM 20 & Social Studies 10
- Spanish Social Studies 10-1/10AP (5 Credits): Taught in Spanish, exploring globalization and historical imperialism within the bilingual context.
- Spanish CALM 20 (5 Credits): Taught in Spanish, this course fulfills the Alberta graduation requirement and includes additional modules like Travel Destinations and Community Volunteerism.
Quick Facts for Parents
- Credits: Spanish Language Arts, Social Studies 10, CALM 20, and all second-language courses are each worth 5 credits.
- Testing: As a member of the International Spanish Academy (ISA), students can challenge the DELE (Diploma de Español como Lengua Extranjera) and AP exams for global accreditation.
