Scholarships and You

 In order to receive any money you need to have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Money can be sent directly to post-secondary school or given to you, and may be specific to province or country

ALBERTA SCHOLARSHIPS:

Alberta Learning Information System (ALIS) - to check out more than 400 scholarships, grants, bursaries and awards.

Rutherford Scholarship - claim in Grade 12 for any/all years in high school. Two levels of funding.

ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS:

Most schools offer some form of entrance award (faculty or into school) as an incentive to come to their school. They are always marks based (i.e. U of A). Check websites for deadlines.

Financial Need:

There are scholarships based on financial need. You have to demonstrate your need, for example, working while going to school: Burger King, Dollars for Learners, Wendy's

Athletic Scholarships:

Post-secondary school specific as they are all slightly different. Once on a team, the scholarship becomes part of a benefit package. They act as an incentive to come to a specific school. For American Universities you must have completed your SATs

Corporation Scholarships:

Independent businesses such as TD Bank, RBC, RE/MAX, Safeway, parental employers, APEGGA

Obscure Scholarships and Contests:

Greyhound, cultural associations, clubs (student/family), churches

Timeline:

Be aware of deadlines, specific awards and admissions to schools. Start planning now.

Brag sheets or brag letter:

Listing your experiences and achievements, reference letters from teachers or work. Volunteerism and community service.

FINANCING

Post Secondary Studies Loans:

Money you pay back after. You can find information on the Alberta Learning Information System (ALIS) under "Student Finance" (AB and Canada)

Bursaries:

Money that does not have to be paid back (Provincial and Federal) based on financial need.
